The Magpie Salute is a collaborative effort between Rich Robinson and Marc Ford, born out of a weekend of performances Robinson did for the Woodstock Sessions series in the Summer of 2016. Having performed one Woodstock Session two years prior, when he was invited to do a second, Robinson decided to pepper his usual solo band with some select guests. He immediately contacted former Black Crowes bandmates Marc Ford and Ed Harsch, both whom Robinson had not performed with in a decade. Both musicians quickly agreed and the stage was set for a very special and unique one-off performance.
The Woodstock Sessions weekend fared so well for the musicians involved, they opted to test the waters and perform an additional show at the Gramercy Theater in NYC at the end of January 2017 and Robinson made a wise decision to add vocalist John Hogg to the fold, whom he had worked with years prior in Hookah Brown. The ticket demand resulted in three additional shows being added and the new band, dubbed The Magpie Salute, set about developing a repertoire of material drawing from Robinson and Ford’s solo careers, the Black Crowes back catalog and a wealth of cover songs.
Sadly, keyboardist Ed Harsch passed away suddenly in November of 2016, just two months before The Magpie Salute was set to debut. It was a massive blow to the project, yet the remaining members insisted on persevering in his honor. The first performance in January of 2017 began with a very moving tribute to Harsch, seguing into a rousing version of “Descending,” a Black Crowes track known primarily for the keyboardist’s stunning contributions. It was a powerful and moving start to a new project with seemingly limitless possibilities.
The Magpie Salute haven’t looked back since those initial shows in January 2017. They embarked on a full-scale tour for much of that same year, then hunkered down in a Nashville studio to cut their first studio album (selections from the Woodstock Sessions of 2016 had previously been released as a self-titled album), the first part of which was released in June of 2018 as High Water I. The second half is set to follow in the Spring of 2019.
The Magpie Salute is currently on tour in the UK and Europe as of this writing.
